BOSTON AMATEUR & COLLEGIATE BASEBALL DIRECTORY

We'll be the first to admit that the BMBL is not the only game in town. Yet, we believe that no other league has the type of baseball community we have, or the offerings we offer. But we also believe ballplayers should have a choice of where to play based on location, schedule, length of season, competitiveness, age, and other factors, such as tournament and event participation and other intangibles. Below is the premier directory of more than 30 amateur adult baseball leagues containing more than 350 teams in Boston and its metropolitan area, spanning to Central Mass, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

For those interested in college baseball (whether to play, spectate or recruit), provided is the most complete school and coach guide in Massachusetts.

For the spectator, professional teams within 50 miles of Boston are provided.

Commissioner: Spencer Sanchez

The Boston Amateur Baseballers' Union was officially established in 2002, but the league's teams have been playing in an unofficial Sunday tradition that stretches as far back as anyone can remember.

BAmBUu is competitive but not cut-throat, and good fun is had by all. Players in the league range in age from 18 to 40-something, and hail from all over Boston and the Boston Metropolitan area (even one team from New Hampshire). Regular baseball rules apply, with a few exceptions, such as no stealing and no head-first sliding, which league officials believe make for a more accessible and safer version of the National Pastime.

Boston Park League (BPL) / auxiliary site
Founded 1929
Affiliation: none
Games in regular season: 32
Teams: 9
President: Walt Bentson

Season begins mid-May and the playoffs end the beginning of August.

America's oldest amateur baseball league, the Boston Park League was founded in 1929 by Bob Cusick, program director for the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. Charlestown, East Boston, South Boston, Hyde Park, Brighton, West Roxbury, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Mattapan, South End, and Dorchester all had teams at some period of time. Teams were sponsored by many different individuals, businesses, and churches. The popular after dinner league was highly publicized, and games were well attended. In the 1930's and 40's, it was not unusual to see 3,000 -- 5,000 fans show up for a regular season game. Come play-off time, the attendance would increase from 8,000 -- 12,000 a game. In the 50's and 60's, the league continued to draw 6,000 or more to post season playoff games. As attendance began to level off, the league continued to prosper, as a steady stream of skilled players were coming and going. The players came from High Schools, Colleges, and many were ex pro's, who 's experience and desire influenced many a ballplayer to play in the best league around.

In 1982, the City of Boston decided to pass on the administrative duties to a small group of former players and coaches. The league named Bill Mahoney it's first President, Harvey Soolman Secretary Treasurer, and Walt Mortimer Umpire in Chief. With the need for more funding, the Budweiser Brewing Co. of Medford, Ma., distributors of Bud Light, sponsored the league for 4 years. The Yawkey Foundation came on board in 1986, and has continuously sponsored the Boston Park League for the last 20 years.

Central Mass Adult Baseball League (Worcester) Founded 1989

President: Mike Belanger

This age 30+ league played a 20-game schedule in 2002 that began mid-May and continued through early August. Playoffs typically wrapping up prior to the Labor Day weekend. There was a wide range of talent in the league. Some guys have never played beyond Little League while others have played in the major leagues. Most have played through high school and college, but there was no playing-level requirement.

The Central Mass Men's Senior Baseball League was formed in 1989, and Tom was the league's first president. This starts a nine-year affiliation with the national Men's Senior Baseball League (MSBL). The Central Mass league begins with four teams (Braves, Red Sox, Brewers and Rockets) and plays a 15-game schedule. Each game played is a nine-inning game, and an "everyone must bat" rule is in effect. All games are played on Sundays. In 1998, Tim Cox becomes the league's second president. The league's executive board decides to withdraw its affiliation with MSBL and maintain independent status. Mike Keating becomes the third league president in 2000, followed by Mike Belanger in 2001. Ex-Red Sox pitcher, Jim Corsi, played the entire 2001 season with the Ravens.

President: Joe Ruth

Founded in the winter of 1989-1990 with the assistance of a financial grant from Consolidated Distributors of Auburn, Massachusetts, the Association was initially known as the Central Massachusetts Baseball Association. Design for this summer league was to revive adult baseball in a region that had a rich and long history of such leagues but saw this lapse after World War Two. Central Massachusetts teams that had been playing in other leagues some stance away returned to form the nucleus for the new Association. Charter teams still active are Ronnie's of Worcester, the Lunenburg Phillies and the Clinton (then Hudson) 76ers. The remaining original teams included three other clubs from Worcester: City Club, the Warriors, and the Metros as well. The Auburn Rockets and Milford Nationals also competed in the original 8 team league.

Over the seasons, Association membership has included teams mainly from the central region of Massachusetts such as Framingham, Hudson and Marlboro but at times some from further the more distant locales of Waltham, Chelmsford and Billerica. In 1996 when Greenfield, Keene, New Hampshire and Brattleboro from Vermont became members, the Association changed its name to reflect its expanded geographic extant.

Over the years, the Association has numbered as many as eleven member teams and always more than seven. The recent success of this league in the Stan Musial state tournament has proven the league to be one of the best balanced and most talented leagues in New England. In 2004 the league voted to use wooden bats for the duration of the entire season.

Cranberry Baseball League (CBL)

Founded 1960
Affiliation: American Amateur Baseball Congress (Stan Musial)
Games in regular season: 30
Teams: 10
President: Dave Paruti

Since its inception in 1960, The Cranberry Baseball League has provided a venue for the area's best amateur, collegiate and former professional players, coaches and umpires in Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Cranberry league is a wooden bat league.

Originally founded by Connie Spillane, the League currently consists of 12 teams in a geographical area that stretches from Boston in the north, Sandwich in the south and Hingham in the east to Wrentham in the west. The level of competition has been and continues to be extremely high.

Connie was the driving force behind amateur baseball in the area for over 70 years. One of his innovations was The Brockton Invitational Tournament. Some of the finest high school and college baseball players in New England make up the rosters of the four participating teams each year. The Invitational offers Major League Scouts and College Coaches an opportunity to evaluate over 100 players in game situations. Brockton Invitational MLB standouts include: Steve Balboni, Tom Glavine, Ken Hill, Bobby Witt, Chris Carpenter, Brian Rose and Rocco Baldelli.

The CBL has split into two divisions for regular season play. The Divisions are named "The Red Conley Division" and "The Walter Haskell Division". Red Conley is a member of the Hall of Fame and was the colorful manager of the Sharon Reds and the Conley Club. Walter Haskell was Connie Spillane's partner in establishing the Cranberry League in 1960.

Each team will play a 30 game regular season schedule between Memorial Day Weekend and the Stan Musial State Tournament. All non- Division games will be played as Sunday DH's to cut down on travel. Division games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The League regular season schedule runs from May 28 through July 11 and the the top 6 teams compete in the AABC Stan Musial Tournament State Tournament.

Intertown Twilight League Baseball (North Shore) Founded 1934
Affiliation: none
Games in regular season: 20
Teams: 6
President: Terry Poste

The Intertown Twilight League is one of the oldest active amateur baseball leagues in the country, founded in 1934. Most of the players are college or former college/high school players; a few have had professional experience. Each team is sponsored by local businesses, and drafts exclusively from its own area. Players from "no man's land" are admitted to the League by vote, at the spring roster meeting, so the teams are profoundly locally-based. Teams play a regular season of 7-inning games at local parks. Home teams pass a batting helmet for donations. During the two play-off series, the collection is made to benefit the league.

The regular season begins late-May and runs through early-August, with a two day break at Fourth of July. Games are played Sunday through Friday evenings, starting at 5:45 (except Sunday games at Rockport start 5:30 and Tuesday games at Manchester start at 7:00).

The playoff season begins in August. The first and fourth place and second and third place finishers play each other in best-of-three series to determine the finalists, who go on to play a best-of-five series for the Championship.

The Men’s Night Baseball League is a 21 and over league in Woburn, MA at Ferullo Field on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Games are 7 innings, and extra innings will not exceed 9 innings. Game 1 starts at 6:15 and no extra innings will be played past 8:30 p.m. Game 2 starts at 8:30 and no extra innings will be played past 11:00. Season begins after July 4th and concludes mid-October.

This league was founded on having fun first and foremost - not to look for the next minor league superstar. We have a great time through healthy competition and good friends. There are leagues around Massachusetts that have tryouts and only the best players are chosen. There are baseball and softball leagues in the local area that let you enter an entire team. That is not how this league is run. Anyone can get a group of players together and win a league, if that is your goal. That is not why this league was started. It is about playing baseball with people that still have the hunger to play the game in a competitive setting.

NCAA SANCTIONED COLLEGIATE SUMMER LEAGUES

Cape Cod Baseball League

Founded 1885
Affiliation: NCAA & NACSB
Games in regular season: 4
Teams: 10
President: Judy Walden Scarafile

The Cape Cod Baseball League prides itself on being the oldest, most successful amateur baseball league in the nation. With roots dating back to 1885, the Cape League has helped foster the careers of thousands of top baseball players, from such stars as Hall of Famer, Mickey Cochrane to Jason Varitek. During the 2005 MLB season, 198 CCBL alumni played in the majors or were on injured reserve. Some 300 ballplayers from colleges and universities across the country are recruited each year to play on the 10 teams of the Cape league. They are hosted by local families, who often enjoy following the career of a young player who ate breakfast at their house for the summer and then made it into the major leagues.

The Cape League season runs from mid-June to mid-August. Each team plays a 44-game schedule. An all-star game is held in mid- to late July, and playoffs are held around the second week of August. The league is also notable for its continuing use of wooden bats. Because it draws top-tier college players, the level of play is often considered the equivalent of high-A Minor League Baseball.

The CCBL Hall of Fame is being housed at Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich, Massachusetts. The Cape Cod Baseball League is one of eight leagues in the National Alliance of Summer Baseball. The 2003 documentary Touching the Game chronicled the story of the players of the Cape Cod League.

To play in the Cape League, potential players must have NCAA eligibility remaining at the start of each Cape League season. This typically applies to freshmen, sophomore and junior class players from 4-year affiliated institutions, with limited exceptions. High school players, college seniors and college players with no NCAA eligibility remaining are ineligible. The Cape League itself does not recruit players. Player recruitment is left solely to each individual franchise, facilitated through each team's manager.

New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)

Founded 1993
Affiliation: NCAA
Games in regular season: 42
Teams: 12 teams in 6 states
President: Kevin MacIlvane

The New England Collegiate Baseball League is summer collegiate baseball at its best! It is one of the most talented and competitive leagues in the country.

Founded in 1993, the NECBL began its direction under George Foster, former Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets All-Star and Major League home run leader and Emmy Award-winning television producer/director Joseph Consentino. Play started in 1994 and today the NECBL has become a strong twelve team league that plays in all six New England states and recruits players attending U.S colleges from New England, the other forty-four States and foreign countries.

The League starts its summer season in early June and plays an eight week 42 game per team schedule. The League Championship is determined by a playoff in early August. Each year our top players are scouted and selected in the MLB Draft.

Any student who wishes to play in the League must be currently enrolled in a NCAA sanctioned College or University, be in good academic standing, have completed one year of athletic eligibility and have at least one year of eligibility remaining. The league strongly suggests that student athletes have their College coach and/or a MLB scout recommend them to any or all of our General Managers.
