In a rare start by Mike Lembo, he pitched very well, allowing 7 scattered hits in a complete game victory for his 2nd win. Lembo was also the hero at the plate, as he had 2 of the 3 White Sox hits, an RBI triple and a 2-RBI double. The 3 RBI's allowed Lembo the finish with 24 -- 8th best in the league.

For the Dodgers, Jose Medina and Mario Saenz allowed only 3 hits combined, but were hurt by 8 walks the White Sox took advantage of. Two of these walks came at the hands of Dan Field, thus finishing him with 16 walks -- 4th best in the league.

The White Sox played spoilers, as their win over the Dodgers sent them to face the Mets in the wildcard game.

In a game that changed leads 4 times, the Rockies finally pulled off the win to clinch the #1 seed in the Baystate conference. The White Sox out-hit the Rockies 11-5, but walks hurt the ballclub and contributed to the loss.

The Sox jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with help from a leadoff single by Mike McInnis and RBI knocks by Mike Lembo (double) and Dave Timmons. With a 2-1 lead going into the second inning, the White Sox added to the lead identically from a leadoff single by Dan Field and RBI knocks by Brett Rudy (double) and Sam Voolich.

Going into the fifth inning, the Rockies had regained the lead, 5-4, but the Sox battled back. After a walk to Mike McInnis and an ROE by Al Wiesner that moved McInnis to third, the game was tied on a double-steal that scored McInnis. Then, Mike Lembo was able to pick up his second RBI of the day with his second hit, scoring Wiesner. The Sox then had a 6-5 lead. But the Rockies battled and tied it up again, 6-6, in the bottom of the frame.

In the sixth inning, a hit, an error and a walk set the stage for Leland Boutilier who drove in the game winning RBI for the Rockies with a sac fly to shallow center. Jim Baldyga almost nailed the runner at the plate with a perfect one-hopper, but the erratic dirt caused a high hop that led to the go-ahead run. The Sox almost battled back, but stranded the tying and winning runners on base for the second straight game.

8/17 - Consecutive Red Sox forfeits allow the White Sox to pick up to easy wins without even going to the ballpark. (record 10-13-1)

Chad Besegai played an instrumental role in leading the Cubs over the White Sox, thus eliminating the Sox from playoff contention. In the 4th inning, he led off with a triple that sparked 4 straight Cubs hits and three runs. Then in the following inning, he ripped a 2-RBI single, giving the Cubs a 5-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, another lead-off walk to Dan Field, with the help pf an Al Wiesner ROE, and singles to Mike McInnis and Mike Lembo led to 3 runs, closing the score to 5-3.

With the game 5-3 in favor of the Cubs in the bottom of the 7th inning, the White Sox loaded the bases with 2 outs, thanks to a Jon Mead single and consecutive walks to Mike McInnis and Mike Lembo. Shane Steffens was brought in for relief from the pen and struck out the final batter to strand the tying and winning runners on base, and pick up his 1st save of the season.

Keith Umlauf picked up the win (4-5), tossing 4 2/3 innings, while Doug Rexrode received the hold, prior to Steffen's save. While pitching a complete game and striking out 7, Al Wiesner (2-5) picked up the loss.

Shane Steffens of the Cubs defeated Sam Voolich and the White Sox in one of the tightest pitching duels of the season. Steffens allowed only 2 hits (to Jon Mead and Jim Baldayga) for the complete game victory. Voolich allowed only 4 hits in 5.2 innings for the hard loss. Al Wiesner pitched the final 1/3 inning without pitching to a single batter -- he picked Trevor Findlen off first base on his third try.

Without knowing it at the time, the Cubs put the game away early scoring 2 runs in the first inning, keyed by a Michael Pietrasiewicz single, a Jeff Seng walk, and a Shane Steffens 2-RBI triple. However, in the 5th, the Cubs added insurance as Mike Ferris singled and Petro hit him in with his second hit.

The Braves scored 10 unanswered runs to erase a 7-run deficit to win 13-10 today at a steamy Cleveland Circle. Mark Doucette picks up the win in relief for the Braves, throwing 3 2/3 innings of 2 hit shutout ball. Dan Field scored 3 runs out of the leadoff spot for the White Sox, while 6 different White Sox batters each collected 1 hit a piece.

Of Note, Dave Timmons ended his 8-game hitting streak, but stole third base -- a feat nobody younger than 33 may ever recall having seen before. Also of note, Jim Baldyga made his MABL pitching debut.

Sox' Sam Voolich (4-1) took a no hitter into the 6th inning before allowing a hit to the Mariners' Brendan Power. That hit sparked a 4-run Mariner ralley to bring the Mariners back to 6-4. But Al Wiesner pitched to the final 4 batters of the game and struck them all out to pick up the save, and allow the White Sox their 8th victory. Wiesner also led the offense, as he went 3 for 4 with 3 steals. And Jim Baldyga also had 2 hits.

7/29 - Yesterday, the 4th Annual Rockies Open was held at George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park. Fifteen foursomes, with 7 MABL teams represented, as well as Rockies friends and family participated. From the White Sox, Brett Rudy, Jim Baldayga and Rob Gnoinski participated and finished 7 over par with a 77.

7/27 - Today at Jim Rice Field, the Boston Baseball League hosted the 1st Annual South End Youth Baseball Camp to improve youth baseball in Boston. Throughout the day, close to 35 kids aged 8-12 participated in drills and a mini-scrimmage. Red Sox' pitching great Luis Tiant also was in attendance. From the White Sox, Brett Rudy, Josh Gordon, Dave Timmons and Sam Voolich were in attendance. Check out South End Youth Baseball Camp Photo Gallery.

7/24 -

Jon Mead
All-Star MVP

The White Sox put on quite a display at the MABL All-Star game this past weekend.

Jon Mead was selected the All-Star MVP, as he hit a 2-RBI double to drive in the game's first runs. Al Wiesner was one of only two All-Stars to collect 2 hits. And Mike McInnis legged out an infield single. Overall, Sox were 4 for 8 with 1 run, 2RBI and a stolen base. Get all the details and view the All-Star photo album.

The Broncos and Santos Gonzalez defeated the White Sox for the 2nd straight game. Gonzalez (5-0, 12 K) now holds 5 of the 7 Broncos wins. While the Sox' record may not show it, the team is currently in 1st place as many teams have some games to play to catch up.

For the Sox, defense hurt the ballclub, as they committed 8 errors, while allowing 9 scattered hits -- 8 of which occurred during a 3-inning stretch. Offensively, five Sox got hits, including Mike McInnis who tripled, and Dave Timmons who extended his hitting streak to 7 games.

A pitcher's duel tied up at 1-1 between the Sox' Sam Voolich and the Broncos' Sandy Gonzalez got out of hand when the Broncos scored 10 runs in the 6th inning.

Jeff Burns played phenomenal defense at third base. In the Broncos first inning with the bases loaded and no outs, Burnsy twice fielded hard grounders and turned the force at the plate. The Broncos did not score that inning.

Offensively, Jon Mead picked up 3 hits for his 2nd straight game to improve his average to .407. Amazingly, Mike McInnis (.429) and Al Wiesner (.512) are both hitting higher. Those three, plus Mike Lembo (3rd in MABL with 18 RBI) head to the MABL All-Star game this weekend.

Newly selected White Sox All-Stars (Jon Mead, Mike McInnis, Mike Lembo and Al Wiesner) picked up 10 of the team's 14 hits as the White Sox went on to beat the Giants.

With the bases loaded in the 1st inning and 2 out, Aarron Hutchins came up big with a 2 RBI single to start things off. Mike Lembo then doubled. From there the Sox did not look back.

Of note, in the second inning, both Mike McInnis and Jon Mead stole home as runners coming in from third base as the back end of double-steals. Al Wiesner pitched the complete game, striking out 10, and picking up the win.

White Sox pitching got into trouble, allowing 21 hits on a hot, muggy night at Ross Field as the team lost their 4th straight game. The highlight on the mound featured Dan Field, who in his MABL pitching debut in the 4th inning, struck out the first batter he faced.

Offensively, the White Sox were lead by Mike McInnis with 3 hits (2 singles and double), Dave Timmons (single and double) and Jon Mead who homered.

The White Sox held on to a 2-1 lead going into the 4th inning when the Royals took a 4-2 lead. By the 5th inning, that lead had increased to 6-3, but the White Sox battled back to tie the score. In the 5th, consecutive walks to Jon Mead and Al Wiesner set the stage for RBI singles by Dave Timmons and Jim Baldyga (3 RBI on the day) to tie the score. But in the 7th, a lead-off Royal single that scored on a double would be enough to seal the Sox' fate, as the Sox dropped 7-6.

The Yankees scored 4 first-inning runs on 4 errors and 3 hits which proved to be enough for the victory, though they tacked on 3 more. Former Sox slugger, Mike Moloney, homered and tripled for the bombers. Two-time Cy Young winner Bryan Gauvin recorded only 4 K's, proving the Sox can handle any pitching.

The White Sox scored their only runs in the 6th highlighted by an Al Wiesner run scoring triple. Aarron Hutchins (single) and Dan Field (double) also reached base and scored in the 6th. Nearly halfway into his second season, Rob Gnoinski was finally handed his first MABL loss.

Injury notes: Mike Lembo dislocated his finger diving into a base and had to leave the game. He is listed as day to day.

Al Wiesner tosses 1-hitter and
delivers only RBI of game.
Al Wiesner (1-1, 0.79) outdueled Tim Fortune (1-2, 0.74) at Clifford Field and the White Sox topped the Mets, 1-0.

The only hit allowed by Wiesner was the 1st inning leadoff batter, Chris Sansone. From then on, Al threw 7 complete innings without allowing a hit. The Mets hit just 2 balls out of the infield, and only 1 runner reached second base all night.

Fortune nearly matched Wiesner, but 3 straight singles to start the game by Josh Gordon, Jon Mead and Wiesner plated the game's only run. Aarron Hutchins had the Sox only other hit and also reached base on a hit-by-pitch.

In one of the best pitched games of the season, Jeff James (7 K, 7 hits) of the Cardinals outdualed Al Wiesner (11 K, 3 hits) of the White Sox - both tossing complete game gems.

Billy MacDougall scored both Cardinal runs after drawing walks in consecutive plate appearances. Dan Jalbert and Chris Caprio each had clutch RBI knocks. Eddie Barber scored the sole White Sox run on an Aarron Hutchins fielder's choice.

The White Sox threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases with only 1 out. But Jeff James dug deep and proceeded to strike out the final 2 Sox batters to clutch his 3rd win, stranding the tying and winning runners on base.

Sam Voolich wins and records GWRBI.
In a see-saw battle, the White Sox took a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning on a Jim Baldyga solo homerun. However, the Broncos padded on 3 more runs. In the bottom on the 7th inning, down 8-7, the White Sox loaded the bases with no outs. After an infield force-out at the plate, Sam Voolich hit a hard ball to shortstop who made the unassisted out at secondbase. However, his throw to first got by the bag and allowed the tying run (Mike Lembo) and winning run (Mike McInnis) to score and allow for a dramatic walk-off victory.

Mike Lembo added 2 doubles and 2 RBI (10) to his MABL lead in that category. In addition to his game-winning at-bat, Sam Voolich picked up his second win (2-0) in 1.2 innings of no-hit relief.

The White Sox put on an 18-hit display versus the Athletics in what began as a tight game. The A's took a quick 2-run lead in the first inning, but the White Sox quickly tied the score 2-2 in the bottom of the frame. After some slugging by both teams, the Sox only had a narrow 9-8 lead at the end of 4 innings. But then the onslaught began as the White Sox scored 13 runs in their final 2 innings. Dave Timmons, Al Wiesner and Mike Lembo each picked up 3 hits for the Sox. And Josh Gordon, Jon Mead, Jim Baldyga and Mike Lembo all scored at least 3 times. Jon Mead also had 4 RBI to lead in that category. Mike Lembo recorded his first MABL win, having relieved starter Sam Voolich in fourth inning and completing the game.
