Sox win it all. Champions at last!

In their 3rd attempt in a week, the White Sox finally prevailed as MABL Champions, their first time achieving the feat.

Dave Martin was masterful on the mound, tossing a complete game and allowing just 3 hits and recording 3 strikeouts. Offensively, the White Sox exploded from the get-go. Once again, Al Wiesner led off the game with a single and scored. Will Bissonnette was hit by a pitch and Nate Pane walked, and they both scored off some Reds miscues. The Sox just continued to pound, chasing starter Chris Allen out of the game in the 4th inning with a 5-0 lead. The Sox smashed out 6 more runs off 6 hits in the 6th inning and another run for good measure in the 7th inning. Wiesner, Ivan Clemente and Mike Lembo all had multiple hits on the night.

The White Sox joined the league in 1994, and this marked their first time as MABL Champions. The longest wait for a Sox ring: Brett Rudy (11 years, since 1995), Al Wiesner (5 years, since 2001) and Mike Lembo (4 years, since 2000). Check out Celebration Photo Album and also the Road to the Championship.

  • Will Bissonnette received Player's Choice as the league's most Elite shortstop. He received more Player's Choice votes than any other player in the league. Biss also placed second in Rookie of the Year balloting, barely losing to Eric Harvey of the Astros 65 to 58.

  • Ivan Clemente (catcher), Kyle Michaud (second base) and Earl Murphy (designated hitter) also won Player's Choice awards as the most Premier players in the league at their positions.

Congrats guys for your individual achievements.

August:
21st Houlding joins an elite club, tosses no hitter

Brian Houlding

Brian Houlding (8-2) became the second White Sox hurler to ever chuck a no-hitter. After a leadoff walk to the Royals' TJ Unger, Houlding retired 21 straight batters for a near perfect game. Unger scored after Mike Malin grounded out. While Unger was advancing to 3rd base, an errant throw allowed him to score, thus shattering the shutout. Houlding finished the day with 5 K's, 1 walk and no hits allowed. With 8 wins, Houlding is also the White Sox all-time single-season record holder for wins.

The first White Sox no hitter in the team's 12-year history was tossed by Al Wiesner on August 6, 2003. In that game, a third inning walk got in the way of a perfect game, though the Sox still blanked the Athletics 5-0.

Sox skipper Brett Rudy orchestrated the 2nd Annual Cooperstown Classic held in Cooperstown, New York, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Since the White Sox did not make the trip, Rudy hooked up with the After tourney losses of 10-6 and 14-7, Rudy got the start on the mound in Game 3 versus the Wellesley Orioles. Rudy tossed the first 4 innings and left with an 8-2 lead, allowing 5 hits, 3 walks, 1 K and just 1 earned run. In the 9th inning, now with a score of 18-16, Rudy re-entered the game and recorded the save to go with his Grays win (both MABL firsts for him). Offensively, Rudy finished the tourney 4 for 10 with a double and a walk.

The Brockton Reds of the MIBL won the tourney, defeating the North Andover Thunder in the finals.

In 2002, the White Sox played the first ever MABL regular season game in Canada by facing off against the Mariners at Olympic Stadium in Montreal. With the departure of the Expos in 2005, the White Sox moved across Canada to play the first ever MABL game in Toronto at the Rogers Centre, home of the Toronto Blue Jays. Check out the Toronto Photo Album.

The A's defeated the White Sox 10-9, but it took extra innings and until 2:19 AM to do so. For the second straight game, the Sox trailed by 3 runs going into the final inning and rallied for 4 runs to take a lead. However, unlike their win last week versus the Indians, this week, the A's tied the score in the bottom of the 9th inning and sent the game into apparent extra innings. The Blue Jays staff insisted the game end in a tie since it was 2:15 AM. However, after Scott Reinold let them try on his World Series ring and players roared a few chants of "Let them Play, Let them Play," the Jays staff allowed one extra inning.

In the top of the 10th inning, the White Sox failed to score. For the A's in the bottom of the 10th inning, Ed Perez walked to lead off and then stole second. After a bunt, Adam Nichols delivered a 1-out GWRBI single to plate Perez for the walk off victory.

17th Wiesner rings up another one - Congrats Al & Dani

In the 5th inning of a Toronto Blue Jays vs. Milwaukee Brewers game from the Football Press Box at Rogers Centre in Toronto Ontario, Al Wiesner rang up the first female of his career -- Danielle. With a little help from Ace the Blue Jays mascot, Al Wiesner locked up a big win as he proposed to Dani and she said 'Yes.' To the surprise of Dani, both her parents and Al's parent were also in attendance. Congrats Al & Dani ! ! !

26th Sox pitching staff get mound work at Fenway Park

On Thursday, the Boston White Sox pitching staff got some additional wound work between starts. As part of Fenway Fantasy Day for Price Waterhouse Coopers, the Boston Red Sox required a pitching staff to toss to them. The Boston White Sox pitching staff of Mike Lembo, Nate Pane, Brian Houlding, Matt LoPresti and Dave Martin was recruited.

After each pitcher tossed in the batting cages beyond the dugout (it was raining, or they would have thrown off the outdoor mound as expected), the staff had some good conversation with Red Sox legends Johnny Pesky and Bill Lee, and also received a private tour of the clubhouse. In return for their service, these pitchers will receive complimentary tickets to an upcoming game.

8th Earl Murphy leads the pack at Fenway Park

On Sunday, May 8th, the Boston Men's Baseball League was responsible for 400 of the sold seats in the bleachers versus the Seattle Mariners. The Boston Red Sox sold these tickets to the MABL White Sox to re-sell so that proceeds could benefit amateur baseball in Boston and Curt's Pitch for ALS. In fact, $2,000 was donated to ALS and another $2,000 to support baseball as a result of this effort.

Representing the Boston White Sox was Earl Murphy. The Murph was introduced before the game at home plate at Fenway Park as the Leader of the Pack.

17th 100 INNINGS OF BASEBALL IN THE BOOKS:
Five members of White Sox play 100 innings in a single game

100 Innings of Baseball Spectacular 2005 The BMBL again held the 100 Innings of Baseball Spectacular and raised $109,000 for Curt's Pitch for ALS and the fight against Lou Gehrig's disease - this year at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, MA, home of the Brockton Rox.

The White Sox raised more money than any other BMBL team and also had 5 players play the entire 100 innings, including co-creators Brett Rudy and Mike Lembo, as well as Matt Giblin, Ryan Gray and Nate Pane. Lembo was also the winning pitcher of record, as he was pitching in the 44th inning when Team Marciano took a lead they would not relinquish. Brett Rudy caught the game's final out by grabbing a fly ball hit to left field to end the 100th inning.

Of note, rookie Matt LoPresti absorbed 18 innings, leading all pitchers. White Sox players Al Wiesner, Scott Reinold, Ivan Clemente and Brian Houlding also played in the game. See White Sox photos from the 100 Inning Game.

The BMBL held its annual league tryout today, and about 150 players were in attendance, with about 57 drafted. The White Sox drafted Matt LoPresti as their only selection, the 14th pick overall.

LoPresti is expected to plug some innings on the mound and fill a void left at first base due to the departure of Joe Fitzgerald and a part-time Ryan Gray, who has decided to pursue an acting career after working with Jimmy Fallon in Fever Pitch.
