Prior to coming to Boston, Mike played ball in the Oak Park Summer Park League in Oak Park, Illinois. In 2002, McInnis was picked up by the White Sox in the 2nd Round of the MABL New Player Draft. As a rookie, McInnis hit .413 through the first 18 games of the season which earned him selection to the MABL All-Star team. Mike hit a whopping .524 during night games. Mike also finished the season with 6 multi-hit games, including 2 three-hit games. On top of that, Mike was blazing on the base paths, capturing 15 stolen bases, good enough for 7th best in the MABL. McInnis also added fine defensive skills at shortstop and was a fine compliment wherever he batted in the Sox lineup. In 2003, McInnis helped get it done for the Sox yet again in the field and at the plate. From shortstop, "Guinness" led the Sox infield with 43 assists -- no other Sox fielder had more than 30 assists. And at the plate, McInnis was always getting on base, as he was tied for 5th in the MABL with 19 walks and had a .348 on base percentage or better during every month of the season, finishing at a .422 clip. McInnis also finished the season with three 2-hit games. In 2004, McInnis played his third straight 20+ game season.
Mike spent much of the season batting toward the top of the lineup due his almost
.400 on-base percentage and ability to score timely and score often, as he scored
in 10 of the Sox 26 games. For instance, against the Cardinals on 8/23, in a 2-2
game, McInnis walked, then scored the eventual winning run when he scored on a Jason
Hoye single. Mike finished the season batting .300 on the nose, with three multi-hit
games. McInnis also hit his first career homerun versus the Marlins when he hit a
2-run blast in the 6th inning of that game to help cap another Sox victory. Defensively,
Mike spent less time in the field than in the past, often hitting as EH or DH, however,
he played a solid infield and outfield when called upon, not making an error the
entire year. McInnis could always be counted on for contributing a positive attitude
at every turn, being a great teammate and getting it done.
