acquired 2001 ESPN Message Board

Acquired as a free-agent during the winter prior to the 2001 season, Al took over thirdbase with authority finishing 5th in MABL Rookie of the Year balloting his rookie year.

In 2001, Wiesner batted .314 and led the Sox in slugging (.514), on-base percentage (.449), steals (13) and co-led the team with 17 RBI. Al's cannon-arm also allowed him to play a closing pitching role, as he led the Sox and league with 6 saves (with a 2.21 ERA). As a result of these accomplishments, Al was selected to his first MABL All-Star team.

In 2002, Al once again was selected as an MABL All-Star and once again led the White Sox in on-base percentage (.486), but he also led the team in batting average at .419. Al ripped multiple hits in 7 games, including four 3-hit games. Additionally, Al moved from a relief pitcher to the starting rotation. In doing so, Wiesner led the team with 50 2/3 innings pitched and 56 strikeouts -- nearly twice as many K's as any other Sox hurler. Al tossed 5 complete games, more than any pitcher since Gary Howard in 1996. Al's best performances in 2002 included his 1-hitter versus the Mets and his 3-hitter versus the Cardinals. Plus, he twice struck out 10+ batters in a game. Additionally, Al picked up 1 save this season to give him 7 in his career -- enough to maintain his status as the MABL All-Time record holder in saves at the time.

In 2003, Al was phenomenal once again. On the mound, Al was untouchable. His greatest feat was tossing the White Sox' first no hitter in franchise history versus the Athletics on 8/6. During this game, Al also set the mark for most strikeouts in franchise history Al finished the season with 2 shutouts, and with 3 in his career, holds the Sox mark in that category as well. Al finished the season with a 5-0 record (including the playoffs), tossing complete games in each win. And at the plate, Al demonstrated yet again how he could get on and move along. By season's end, Al had compiled a .463 career on-base percentage and was 2nd in the entire MABL in both walks (21) and steals (23). This combination allowed him to lead the Sox with 19 runs scored. Al got especially hot with the stick toward the end of the season, as he hit .400 during August and September. He carried this sizzle into the playoffs, as he co-led the team with a .357 playoff batting average -- including a bomb that hit the top of the fence at Billings Field versus the Royals for a triple.

Yet, 2004 may have been Al's best season overall. Al finished the season with a 6-1 record with 2 saves on the mound. During that time, he set team records for most strikeouts, innings pitched, and wins in team history. Plus, he finished the season with a 1.13 ERA, second best in team history. And at the plate, Al finished the season hitting .304, but smacked .421 during the second half. He finished the season 4th in the league in stolen bases (16), and in doing so, passed Adam O'Hara as the White Sox all-time stolen base king. Most impressive was that at Al played the first 24 games of the season at third base before making an error, handling 50 consecutive chances perfectly. Al was also selected as an MABL All-Star for the third time. Al is as hard-nosed a player as they come.

Records: MABL All-Time single season leader, Saves (6), White Sox All-Time leader, Wins (12), Saves (9), Strikeouts (142), Innings Pitched (134), Complete Games (11), Shutouts (4), No-hitters (1), Stolen Bases (64), Walks (58).

Awards: MABL Cy Young, 5th Place (2004), MABL Most Valuable Player, 8th Place (2004), MABL Rookie of the Year, 5th Place (2001).

Appearances: 2005 MABL Champion, 2001, 2002, 2004 & 2005 MABL All-Star, 2001 Boston Dirt Dogs (AZ).
