Matt Giblin came to the White Sox via referral from Mike Lembo.
Gibby brought with him two years of experience playing for the University of New
Hampshire Club team, a member of the NECBA. Prior to UNH, Matt played for Norwood
High School.
For the White Sox in 2003, his rookie season, Giblin was exactly what the White Sox
needed. In addition to being one of the more inspirational players on the squad,
Gibby always got the job done. The best example of this is likely versus the Rockies
on 9/6 where Giblin had the only Sox hit, breaking up a no-hitter. But Gib's best
game was clearly versus the Dodgers on 7/25 when he notched 3 infield singles on
a perfect day. That speed also was displayed on the bases, as Gib had a perfect 100%
steal percentage with 7 swiped bases over the season. Giblin got it done with his
glove, too. On 7/19 versus the Cubs, Gib recorded 5 putouts and an assist at secondbase,
accounting for 29% of all Sox fielding outs that day.
In 2004, Gib seriously upped his run production. You knew it was going to be a big
year when he started the season 5 for 7 through 3 games. In almost an identical number
of trips to the plate this season versus last, Giblin increased both his runs scored
and RBI totals by 5, while upping his batting average by nearly 100 points. Giblin
could always be counted on to put the ball in play, as he went the team's first 18
games before his first strike out. And he did not walk once all season! Similar to
the year before, Giblin came through when nobody else could. On 8/8 versus the Giants,
the Sox were down 9-0 without any hope. But in the 5th inning, Matt Giblin stepped
up to pinch hit with the bases loaded and delivered a 2-out, 2-RBI single. That was
all the damage the Sox would record on the day. That was just the kind of delivery
you could expect from Gib, and you couldn't ask for a more dedicated teammate.
Appearances: 2005 MABL Champion.
