Jim played American Legion baseball in Westwood, MA prior to be
drafted in the second round of the 2003 MABL Draft. Jim had actually worked out with
the Sox on two occasions prior to being drafted, so the Sox believed Jim would be
exactly what the team needed for bullpen support. However, Jim only received a handful
of opportunities to display his stuff and struggled with location on both occasions.
The first time being in Olympic Stadium in Montreal, where he recorded the lone out
of his season when Jim Baldyga threw out a runner at secondbase from the outfield,
trying to stretch a single into a double. Midway through the season, Lane departed.
Though he returned for a small stretch toward the end of the year, he split again
just as quickly.
