Matt Smith joined the White Sox after a fine career with the United States Coast Guard Academy. In 2004, Smith's senior year, he was a member of the 2004 NEWMAC All-Conference Academic Team. He also tied the school record with his seventh career save while setting the record with 60 career appearances. With the White Sox his rookie season, Smith spelled R-E-L-I-E-F. Smitty led the team in saves with 3 (no other member of the Sox had any) and co-led the team by pitching in 12 of their 25 games. In 7 of these games, he did not allow any hits at all.
