| John O'Brien was one of the pioneers on the White Sox pitching
staff, as he was one of the first players who pitched, and only pitched. While John
made his starts, he was primarily known as a tough reliever. In 1998, he saved 3
games. His best save outings include 2 innings of scoreless ball versus the Indians
to preserve a shutout, or versus the Red Sox where he pitched the final 1 1/3 innings
of that game allowing no hits and preserving a 9-8 victory. After a win versus the
Cubs on 6/15, John injured his shoulder playing basketball and was expected to miss
the remainder of the season. However, when the White Sox entered the playoffs, O'Brien
returned to pitch in the Playoff Elimination game versus the Diamondbacks after missing
more than 2 months of play. However, his rust from time-off was apparent as the Sox
were defeated by a whopping score of 19-14. Following his injury, O'Brien never regained his previous domination. Though he returned in 1999 to throw a handful of innings and pick up his 2nd career win, besides his comedic team support, there was nothing left to offer. John retired from the Sox tied for the team All-Time lead in saves (3) at the conclusion of the season. Two years later, John graduated from Northeastern University. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Houston, Texas where he is currently on track to receive a graduate degree from Texas A&M in 2004. MABL Career Statistics: PITCHING
